We’ve been busy getting ready for a swinging 2012 – and just because it is January does not mean that shed builders are sitting on their laurels doing nothing!  We are slightly redesigning the popular Manor Shed to bring you a Heritage-style design.  Both, the Manor and the Heritage are sheds in the Estate Series offered exclusively by Fox’s Country Sheds.

We are in full production here at the Fox Den – a.k.a. our shop – and our crew is busily building stock sheds for our shed dealers to place on their lots once a busy spring season hits.  Of course, we are open year-round, and you can order your Manor Shed now.  Why wait for Spring when the backlog is huge?

Here are some photos of our new Manor Shed – an Estate Series Shed by Fox’s Country Sheds that will truly enhance your upscale property.

Well, let’s say that now that you have your backyard storage shed – you need to put things away in it in an organized manner.  And keep it that way.  Sometimes that is easier said than done.  Here are some ways that Fox’s Country Sheds suggests that you can organize your tools and equipment in your backyard storage shed or garden shed.

Used Crates:  Do you have any old wooden or plastic crates lying around?  Bet you never thought about stacking them securely and using them as storage

A wall of crates creates a unique storage solution for your shed.

cubicles.  Take a look at the photo on Design Squish that uses stacked crates to create a wall of storage.  You can easily adapt this use in your garden shed as well.   This makes an ideal solution for keeping garden equipment separate from household tools.  One crate can keep open bags of grass seed safely contained while another can keep power tools out of reach of youngsters.  Use your imagination and space in any way that they will fit alongside the walls of your shed.  The nice thing about this solution is that you can use as many or as few as you have room for, depending on the size of your shed.

Pegboard Wall Storage:  Another idea to keep garden shed tools organized is to install a wall of pegboard.

This is available as an option on all of the sheds and garages available at www.FoxSheds.com.  You can always paint it to create a cheery interior, as shown on this photo from Martha Stewart.

Are we nuts?

I saw a squirrel chasing a nut across the street yesterday, and somehow it struck me as quite ironic.  I’ve admitted before that I hate squirrels (and yes, hate is a strong word), but I was too amused with the scene to think about putting the pedal to the metal and making roadkill out of him.  No, I would never really do that, and I found myself slowing down to let him cross, as I watched, amused.

Interior of Garage built on site from Fox's Country Sheds

Who am I to put the brakes on his goals? It was quite funny because this nut was rolling down the hilly street, and this poor squirrel kept catching up, before it would get away from him again.

What struck me as ironic is the fact that we are all – squirrels and humans alike – chasing something. It might be a dream, it might be a goal, it might be the basic pursuit of happiness. And when we find that “something”, whether real or perceived, we tend to store it away.

But at what point are we content with what we have? Here it is, springtime, and this squirrel surely would have had enough nuts stored away by now over the long cold winter.  Yet, here was one more that he just needed to have, risking life and limb and bushy tail as he crossed the street in front of my silver four wheeled nutcracker.

How much stuff is too much?

Setting up the interior of a doublewide garage from Fox's Country Sheds

Where do we put all our stuff?

How do we keep it safe until we need to use it?

It reminded me of  when I was actively selling real estate, and buyers and their continued search for that one perfect house – chasing after each new listing and never making a decision.   The perfect house is out there, yet the search continues until they’ve exhausted themselves and their agent.  When do they stop?

It reminded me of myself as an active real estate agent and my continued search for the perfect buyer.  The perfect listing.  The perfect comission split and the perfect broker.  When do we stop?

And real estate sellers aren’t left out of the picture either. A seller who has stored all of his nuts into the equity of his home, only to find out that his cache is not worth as much as he thought. Where’d all that equity go?

I guess all of these thoughts would not have normally crossed my mind at the sight of a squirrel chasing a nut, but it just happened to be right as I was heading to yet another busy day at work at Fox’s Country Sheds. All my thoughts were on the busy day ahead, helping to run a custom storage shed manufacturing business and helping our customers to select the perfect storage shed for all of their nuts. Ahem…stuff. Thoughts of work, shed sizes, shed styles, “did I get the wholesale price lists out to all of our dealers”, “did we get the skylites on order in on time for the potting sheds”, is so-and-so ready for their delivery, etc., along with way too much caffeine in the morning, sparked this vision of us all chasing nuts.  And storing them.

….And thus, you might think I am one (a nut)…… but I’m not.

I’m just storing one.  Or two.  Or several.  Just like you are.

Heritage Shed Garage from http://www.FoxSheds.com

Maybe I’m not a nut – just a pack-rat. Where else can I keep my endless supply of garden hoses, rakes (at last count I think we have about 5 rakes), shovels, unused flower pots, sprinklers, opened bags of potting soil and peat moss…. you get the picture.

But, unlike that squirrely little gray rodent, my stuff is neatly stored in my Heritage garden shed garage.  If you ever wonder what type of shed or garage a shed builder has – this is it!  I lovingly refer to it as my “sh-arage” a cross between a shed and a garage.

After watching this squirrel and his amusing chase, I have to admit ~ I have a newfound respect for that busy little rodent.

But, as roomy as my Heritage Shed garage is – squirrels are not welcome!

What do you do when you find that you no longer have room in your garage for all of your “stuff”, yet access to your yard is limited for the delivery of a storage shed? A shed kit can be the answer you are looking for.

Shed Kits delivered from Fox ShedsBy now you might be wondering, “What in the world is a shed kit, and what do I do with it?” Those plastic pre-formed, unsightly sheds that one finds at a chain home-improvement mega-store might come to mind (such as a Rubbermaid shed), but that is not what we have in mind for you here at Fox Sheds & Structures!

Our “shed kits” are exactly like our pre-assembled garden sheds at Fox’s Country Sheds — attractive, built to order, and fairly easy to put together if you have some basic construction know-how and some friends to help (friends with muscles are a bonus!).  Our crew will pre-build portions of your shed as much as possible, so that you can easily attach the walls and floor.  This is what we call a “knock down kit”.  The roof rafters will be pre-notched for easy installation before you complete building the roof.  Everything you need, from the pressure treated runners right up to the 30 year  shingles, is included in your shed kit. You also have a preference of vinyl siding on your shed (included in your choice of color), or easy to paint dura-temp wood siding (paint not included unless requested).

Our shed kits will give you everything you need to build your shed in your limited space, without the worry and stress of trying to figure out Assembled Carriage Shed from Fox Shedswhere to begin if building from scratch.  “Exactly how much lumber do I need?  How many square of siding and shingles?  Where do I cut this thing?!” All of those questions and answers are already taken care of, and delivered right to your driveway!  Easy to understand instructions are included, and an instructional DVD video is coming soon.

Fox Sheds does recommend that you have some construction knowledge, such as how to use a drill, measuring tape and level.  If you have access to a nail gun, it will make your installation much easier and quicker!  You can easily rent one from a local tool rental facility, which will rent tools to you by the day or by the week.

Before beginning construction of your Fox Shed kit, be sure to select a level area in your yard where you plan on erecting the shed.  Proper site preparation for your shed is important.  We recommend that a good, firm stone pad is prepared.  When you place your shed kit order, we can give you instructions on how to prepare your site for good drainage and a solid, level base.

Assembling a Shed KitPutting together a shed kit, whether it is a vinyl siding shed kit or a painted wooden shed kit, will take some time – so plan ahead. But, it will save you money in the long run if you consider the cost of a “build on site” by the manufacturer (typically, there is a fee for Fox’s Country Sheds to “build-on-site” if a pre assembled storage shed or garage cannot be accommodated).  Another option might be for you to hire a general contractor who will easily be able to follow our instructions on assembling the shed kit.  We are always available by phone or email to answer any questions, and you will be able to speak directly with our construction foreman for any difficulties that you might encounter.

Any questions about Shed Kits?  Please feel free to contact us directly at www.FoxSheds.com !   Remember that we ship nationally, right to your driveway.

I was reading an interesting article today, chock full o’tips about organic gardening. This is just one of the many recent articles that I’ve

Porch Patio Garden Shed

Porch Patio Garden Shed

come across that mention how many new gardeners there seem to be this season as compared to previous years.  Largely due to the economy, people are looking for ways to raise their own crops of organic garden goodies.

Here is a recent article in the Lancaster County Newspaper that gardeners might find interesting:

  • Did you know that you can plant basil near your tomatoes to help enhance the flavor and keep away pests?  Wow!  Who knew?!
  • Did you know that planting cosmos flowers near tomatoes and peppers helps attract praying mantis and lady bugs, which eat the pestier pests?  Who knew!?
  • Did you know that tomatoes and peppers are the easiest veggies to grow in containers?  They are easy for newbie gardeners and those who are limited with space – grow a tomato plant on your deck!

Does this news excite you as much as it does me?  It makes me wish these rainy days would end already so that I can go out and play in the dirt, not to mention make myself a yummy tomato salad (with basil!).

If you have any gardening tips to share, please feel free to do so here!  And of course, if you are looking for a garden shed to keep all of your tools handy, look no further than Lancaster’s own Country Sheds manufacturer!

A few more “did you knows” that you might not have known:

  • Did you know that Fox Sheds recycles all of their vinyl siding scraps?

  • Did you know that Fox Sheds recycles all of their aluminum trim scraps?
  • Did you know that Fox Sheds recycles all of their wood construction scraps, which go right to a local gardening nursery center for mulching?
  • Did you know that Fox Sheds uses a type of poly-wood product on their porch sheds, which is made from recycled plastic material?
  • Did you know that Fox Sheds uses recycled poly-wood for their flower boxes?
  • Did you know that Fox Sheds uses pressure treated lumber that is free of harmful chemicals?
  • Did you know that Fox Sheds cares about the environment as much as you do?

Well, Now you know!
