It’s no surprise that during the summer months, while we are busy enjoying the outdoors and vacationing, our sheds and garages may start to get cluttered and unorganized.  We tend to hurry and throw things in there, vowing to spend time another day to organize our spaces.

Fall is a great time to get organized and take inventory of just what might need to be saved or chucked.  Cleaning out your garage or shed might take some time, so plan on saving an entire day to spend on doing a great job.

The first step would be to clear out all of the items in your garage.  This might be a good time to determine if you indeed need a shed for additional storage to help keep your garage roomy enough for your car to actually be parked in it.  Once you have it emptied out completely, you can make piles of what tools or equipment need to go into the shed, and what should remain in the garage.  Keep in mind that you still need to keep enough room for your autos.

Now that the garage is empty, it’s time to give it a good cleaning from top to bottom.  It would be handy if you had a long handled broom or even a dry-vac to get any dust and cobwebs from the upper corners of your garage.  Sweeping and vacuuming the walls, floors, garage doors would give you a good opportunity to notice any areas that might be in need of repair, and will help get any musty odors out.

Many times when you have hooks and racks overhead in your garage, you tend to store things that you will never, ever, reach for again.   The same might be true of shelves on the walls.  This is a good time to take inventory of what you need to keep within easy reach, what you need to toss, and what might need to be stored away in a shed rather than in your garage.  The nice thing about keeping these items in an easy to reach loft in your shed is that they are much more accessible than in the garage.  Take advantage of overhead storage, and when you are in the planning stage of your new shed, think about adding an overhead loft for additional storage.

Organizing your tools by activity or season is one way to put these items back in an orderly manner.  This way you will be able to easily find tools or equipment based on the season’s activity.  Moving the larger equipment like snow blowers and mowers out of your garage and into a shed in an orderly fashion will allow enough room in your garage for parking your car once again.  Designate a corner in your shed for each season.

One way to keep your garage organized is to park in it daily.  A storage shed can easily help you to meet this goal.  You can view a variety of sheds in many different sizes right on our website at Fox Country Sheds.

If you  have any tips on organizing your garage or shed, please share in the comments.

We are in full production here at the Fox Den – a.k.a. our shop – and our crew is busily building stock sheds for our shed dealers to place on their lots once a busy spring season hits.  Of course, we are open year-round, and you can order your Manor Shed now.  Why wait for Spring when the backlog is huge?

Fox’s Country Sheds not only builds sheds, but also specializes in prefabricated or built on site single and 2-car garages.  Many of our customers prefer the prefabricated buildings that we deliver completely assembled.  When we deliver a pre-built two car garage, most often it is delivered in two pieces and the final assembly is done on site where the two halves are joined together.  Other customers of ours here at Fox’s Country Sheds prefer to have their garages built ‘on site’ which means that we will come to your location and erect the structure.  Most times this is when the municipality will only offer zoning approval for a concrete floor garage or poured footers as a foundation. Many times we will need to do a build-on-site if there is no access for a fully assembled structure to be delivered, such as lack of driveway space or other obstacles.

Fox Sheds can build a garage for you either way, whether pre-built completely or built on-site.  Below are a few photos of a custom “build on site” that was done for a customer in New Jersey.  We often have customers from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland and Virginia contact us about building a garage or shed, and of course we deliver what they need!

Be sure to scroll through the slideshow of a custom 2-car garage with a concrete floor, which was “built on site” for our New Jersey customer:

This month, September 2010, Fox’s Country Sheds is offering a FREE ridgevent with any shed purchase of 8×12 or larger. Mention this offer to any Fox’s Country Sheds sales rep to receive your free ridgevent!

Not sure what a ridgevent does or if it is needed on your shed?  Below is an interesting article on how a ridgevent works when installed in your home.  The principles are the same for why a ridge vent is important in your shed.

A ridgevent, when properly installed, will allow the hot air that collects to escape as it rises in your shed (hot air rises!).  Since sheds are generally not as tall as homes, there isn’t a whole lot of area for the hot air to collect, making some sheds too hot to want to spend much time in there.

Allowing the hot air to escape will also extend the life of your shingles, something that we highly recommend even though the shingles used by Fox’s Country Sheds in each and every building are all 30-Year shingles.  Hot, moist air collecting under your roofing sheathing is not very healthy for your shed.

Along with the hot air, a ridgevent will allow fumes from your gas powered lawn equipment to escape.  So, if the hot air doesn’t bother you too much, consider the fumes collecting in your backyard shed from your lawn tractor.

A ridge vent is particularly important to include when considering options for your shed when you will be using your structure as a Garden Office or Workshop.  In this case, you may even consider upgrading to vented soffits along with a ridgevent for a fully ventilated shed or garage.

To learn more about ridgevents, read the article below.  And to order your 8×12 shed with a FREE ridgevent during the month of September 2010, click on our website at www.FoxSheds.com .
